What Will Your Legacy Be?

Dear Friend of Franklin & Marshall,

As the years pass, we begin to think about our legacy. Will the people we love, the organizations we care about, and the community and world we inhabit be in a better place because we were on this earth? What will our “moral biography” say about our values and what we held dear?

For many of us, raising children is the main way our values and family heritage continue on. Supporting non-profit (a/k/a “public benefit”) organizations whose missions put our deeply held beliefs into action is another means by which we can positively impact the future.

As you reflect on what you would like your legacy to be, we hope you decide that Franklin & Marshall College will be part of it. For many, legacy planning begins with “family first”, which is as it should be. But keep in mind that you can tax-efficiently provide for supplemental lifetime retirement income for yourself, for lifetime income for your spouse, partner, parents, elderly relative, friend or employee, or for tuition for your grandchildren’s educations and also invest in the future of F&M and her wonderful students. This Gift Planning website will help you learn about ways to accomplish these goals, both during your lifetime and thereafter.

You need and deserve to have a custom legacy plan. Your legacy plan begins with what is in your heart. Think about it. Write down the people and organizations you care about and how you want each to be a part of your plan. Discuss it with your spouse or partner. We hope you will honor Franklin & Marshall by including us. Make a list of what you own and what you owe and put values to both. Take your legacy list and financial information to a trust and estates attorney. If F&M is part of your plan, I encourage you also to consult with the College before your will, trust, and retirement plan and insurance policy beneficiary designations are finalized. We would be honored to share ideas that will ensure that your wishes regarding how the College eventually uses your gift are understood and thus can be followed. Please know that all such conversations will be held in the strictest confidence.

I hope to hear from you soon.

With best wishes and warm regards,
